Taking the kids to New York needn’t cost you a fortune. Families on a limited budget can have a whale of a time visiting the Big Apple if care is taken while choosing places to visit. Here are three suggestions to help you make the perfect itinerary.
Madison Square Gardens
The world famous sports and concert venue offers activities to suit everyone. Stamp your feet to the world’s top rock bands or close your eyes and drift off while enjoying a Beethoven symphony: the “Garden” has it all.
As well as music, Madison Square Garden offers a wealth of opportunities to watch professional sporting events, such as catching a basketball game with the kids. Madison Square Garden has been the home venue of the New York Knicks for years. Other sports you and the family can watch there include ice hockey and tennis.
American Museum of Natural History
Close to Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History is a really fun place for kids of any age. Forget your mental picture of a typical dry and boring museum, the AMNH is slick, modern and takes advantage of all of today’s technology to provide exciting and educational displays from the world of animals.
A top attraction for youngsters is the Dino Tour. The museum has gathered together a superb collection of dinosaur fossils and reconstructions. Be prepared for squeals of awe when your kids see the king of dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus Rex. This monster has a jaw that spans four feet and six inch teeth! It looks frightening even as a skeleton. Although there is a suggested admission fee, you don’t have to pay this but free to make a donation of your choice.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of New York streets, Central Park provides a peaceful sanctuary where the family, particularly mom and pop, can relax a little. Grab a snack from one of the many food carts littered around and, weather permitting, have a picnic. If it rains, there is a choice of affordable places where you can eat and still enjoy the park surroundings. Don’t forget to visit the Victorian carousel and let the kids take a spin on one of the horses.
Although prices in New York can be high, if you take the time to plan your visit and are careful in selecting the activities you indulge in, a family outing there need be no more costly than it would be in any other major city.
